To help reduce the accidental drowning of children, below are the general pool safety codes for fences as defined by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Before installing a pool fence, you should also review the specific Tennessee laws for residential swimming pools, as well as any regulations that your specific county, city, or HOA may have in place.
- Pool fences should be a minimum of 48" tall.
- On fences with horizonal members, the middle horizontal member should be at least 45" above the bottom horizontal member to prevent using the horizontals as a type of ladder for climbing.
- The bottom of your pool fence should not exceed 4" above a solid-surface foundation, or 2" above a non-solid surface, such as grass or gravel.
- The spacing between vertical members should be less than 4".
- The pool gates must be self-closing, self-latching, and open outward (away from the pool).
- The opening mechanism of the latch must be at least 54" above ground level.
